HARARE - The Zimbabwe International Carnival has been moved from May to September 12 to 19. The Harare International Carnival is a week-long annual festival that encompasses a series of events and festivities. It is aimed at advancing the arts, culture and heritage of Zimbabwe as well as uniting the populace.
Lindiwe Makoni of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority on Tuesday confirmed the shifting of the dates.
“Firstly, May is a rather cold month for people to really have a party on the streets,” Makoni said.
“A carnival is all about having fun and being able to dance in good weather. We discussed it with the relevant teams and we found that September is a good month to work with.”
She added: “Another reason is that September is the Tourism month so it will coincide with that. It is a good month as many tourists will be coming in for the carnival in the month of tourism.
“We also moved the dates to coincide with the many celebrations we will be having as a country, we will have harvested our crops, we will also be looking forward to another farming season.”
Several tourists and acts come in from different parts of the world, with the most popular being the Samba Dancers from Brazil.
The street processions move from 4th Street in Harare to Rekai Tangwena, with local acts, including musicians and dancers, among the carnival entertainment.
Last year, organisers slotted in the Zimdancehall and Sungura nights, to accommodate the two biggest music genres at the moment.
“It is all about celebrating diversity, getting communities together, getting to know one another, in the love and harmony that builds our country into a peaceful and promising place for everyone,” Makoni said.
“Zimbabwe as a country boasts of the rich cultural traditional events which celebrate the seven wonders of the country in activity, jubilation and colour.” Daily News.
