A 21-year-old Australian woman recently learned the hard way that a McDonald’s parking lot is a terrible place to get a great deal on smart phones after she paid $1,200 for two edible apples thinking they were iPhones.
It all started when the unidentified woman placed an ad on Gumtree — basically UK’s Craigslist but with less alleged prostitution — asking if anyone had any iPhones for sale. According to the Herald Sun, it wasn’t long before someone replied to the ad saying that she had not one but two iPhones for sale. And all for the low, low price of $1,200, saving the buyer about $10 if she had just gone to an Apple store.
The two arranged to meet at a local McDonald’s parking lot where the buyer exchanged her $1,200 for two “iPhone boxes that looked new.” The woman failed to check the boxes before handing over the money. It wasn’t until she got home that she discovered she’d been scammed. Unfortunately, there isn’t much the police can do except for warn people to be “wary” when shopping online.
On the bright side, at least she still got to play a quick game of Fruit Ninja.
