A MUTARE man was last week advised by the presiding magistrate, Mrs Yeukai Chigodora, to claim for maintenance from his ex-wife who had confessed dumping their four children at his doorstep.

This all came to light after Esnath Mapungwana had approached the Mutare Civil Courts seeking a protection order from her ex-husband, Hilary Magadu, whom she accused of violence.

She said she wanted him barred from visiting her place of residence.

Magadu, however, told the court that he had every reason to oppose Mapungwana's application since he wants to update her on their children's well being.

Mapungwana, he claimed, left him in April 2014 and came back to dump the children sometime in May when he was not around.

"The eldest is only 14 and is of ill-health. She recently had a mild stroke and needs her mother's care, but my ex-wife does not care. The youngest is two years old and still needs her mother's care.

"I also cannot look after my children alone, Your Worship. I have since stopped working because my daughter needs all my attention and I pray she be ordered to assist me financially in looking after the children because she is employed," said Magadu.

Mrs Chigodora advised him to make a maintenance application if he desired to be assisted financially by Mapungwana.

"I am not in a position to force her to take the children back into her custody, but the best advice I can give is for you to apply for maintenance," said Mrs Chigodora.

Mapungwana's application for a protection was granted and Magadu was barred from disturbing her peace in the form of assaults, insults or visits.
