Mississippi teen, Deryl Paul Dedmon will spend 50 years in federal prison for torturing James Craig Anderson in 2011. Dedmon and a group teens, spent their time targeting Black people who they thought were either homeless or intoxicated. The group ambushed Anderson, and Dedmon ran over the victim with his truck.
According to prosecutors, when the beating was over, another passenger in the Jeep and Dedmon yelled, “White Power!”
Rollingout.com report reported: “a surveillance camera captured the video of Anderson being run over repeatedly by the truck driven by Dedmon. Dedmon’s friends, Dylan Butler, John Rice, Sarah Graves, John Blalack and Robert Rice were also in the truck.”
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement posted by NBC News:
The defendants targeted African-American people they perceived as vulnerable for heinous and violent assaults — hate crimes, motivated solely by race, that shook an entire community and claimed the life of an innocent man.
These sentences bring a fitting end to the case against these three men. Although nothing can erase the grievous harms inflicted, or ease the grief of the victim’s friends and loved ones, this outcome holds those responsible for these horrific crimes fully to account.
Other members of the group received smaller sentences than their ruthless partner. John Aaron Rice, 21, was sentenced to 220 months, or more than 18 years, and Dylan Wade Butler, 23, was received 7 years, according to officials.
