HARARE. – It seems the church is the source of latest news today. Once upon a time it was holy water; this was popular in most local churches, especially white garments. Then anointed oil substituted all and became a hit with congregates in Zimbabwe’s Christian community arising infinite disputes.
Long before the debate even had subsided, there is a new spectacle of holy soil being extracted at Prophet Magaya’s PHD holy ground, right at his church venue; we then featured an informative analysis of the significance of such a place. And recently, we discovered that the flock is even scooping some of the soil from the holy ground in order to use for various complaints. If say, 300 000 people attends the holy ground, like the figures claim, then they would need to replace it regularly assuming each person carries home a handful after each service.
And some members even echo that the soil is working wonders. As all this unfolds, we ask: where then is the Holy Spirit in all these scenarios? Have we become so dependent that we have forgotten the miracle-working God who can do all. It is recorded that somewhere healed by merely touching Jesus's garment but can we obsessed with such incidences to the extent of believing and depending on them entirely without prayer and other facets?
While visiting a former church member, this writer was offered the 'holy soil'. The member under scrutiny had recently attended Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries earlier. She claimed she had received instant healing for her unnamed health condition. She has revealed that after seeking healing from other infinite sources, she was finally on the road to recovery. This was great news that should be intercepted with joy, except maybe for witches who were probably lining her as their next meal. But it was her belief in the power of the soil that left this author bewildered and facilitated this piece.
While we celebrate with her, we must not forget the confusion caused by anointed oil earlier in Harare and beyond. Pastors claimed that their oil possessed powers to raise the dead and curing a plethora of ills. This was mere oil that could be bought in shops and prayed for. Many recall scenes of stampede that resulted as people fought for the 'healing' commodity. The wave of anointing oil had been unleashed on the nation and it was supposed to free. But then a clique of bogus business minded people who began bottling the commodity and retailing it, gaining a fortune in the process. Being miracle-seeking Christians that Zimbabweans have become, many were duped into buying the oil in order to get deliverance.
Elsewhere, some people even relegated their medication entrusting their salvation to the oil. And now we have an influx of holy soil to deal with. Images of worshipers kneeling in the confinements of the holy ground have invaded various social networks. The holy ground, according to sources is a place where the church seeks to reinvent what transpired to Moses when he spoke to God and proceeded to receive directives concerning his mission. A while back, when this writer was in South Africa, he covered a story on patients who defaulted on their medication after receiving assurance that they would receive healing through holy water and oil. Unfortunately, some of them died because of this misconception. The provincial health minister issued a warning condemning the practice. Those who headed his calls survived. Later on, we encountered a congregation that was directed to eat grass by their church leaders. This according to press reports would bring cure to many sicknesses bedeviling the people. Our notion is not to question God's ability, but some of the methodologies used by church leaders have condemned people into useless beings that cannot decide for themselves. Have we become so blinded that we believe that ingesting green grass will cure one's sickness.
If we are so naive to believe all this, then what separates us from white garment churches that the PHD founder has labeled as 'marine or water spirit infested'. Often, worshipers have put all their trust on car stickers, oil, regalia and now soil instead of prayer, fasting and meditating on the word of God. While faith in God cannot be denied, it is the extreme scenarios that we question. When a servant of God pronounces something, are we supposed to be gullible and just graze grass like animals, swallow and expect everything to function normally? Or because he is the founder, can we indulge in practices that are detrimental to one' health in a bid to be obedient.
