HARARE – It is now official, secular musicians are turning to God as an alternative, albeit after experienceing various challenges in their lives.
The latest recruit into Christ is former Extra Kwazvose chanter Jonasi Kasamba and drummer Obert Gomba. The duo have joined choral group Extreme Afrique Choir. Thet further declared that they have both now turned to God for salvation.
To butrres their claim, the two later performed with the group fronted by Laiton Ngolomi at recent album launch in Harare. The ensemble leader Ngolomi confirmed the development.
“They are now going to church and they are happy to work with the gospel group. We are also happy about their decision. If you come to our rehearsals you will realise that they come early for work and do their work with passion,” he said.
He futher added that, their commitment to work with the band was encouraging.
Kasamba said he gave his life to God after failed attempts to make ends meet.
“Everything happens for a purpose and I gave my life to God,” saying that only God would provide answers to the problems he was facing with his family.
“At times you go around looking for solutions forgetting that there is God who is the solution to all your problems. We have joined this group and everything is now well with me and my family,” said Kasamba.
Gomba revealed that they are not looking back on their new mission. to seek Jesus.
“Our lives belong to God and we are not going to reverse our decision to turn to Him for our lives and careers,” he said.
Kasamba made headlines early this year after he announced that he was relocating to his home country, Democratic Republic of Congo after living a near destitute life when he severed ties with sungura maestro Alick Macheso hit a snag after he refused to re-employ them.
Kasamba and Gomba together with guitarist Noel Nyazanda ditched Macheso and combined with Francis “Franco Slomo” Dhaka to form sungura group Extra Kwazvose. The four had a fall out prompting Franco Slomo to take over the band as the sole leader.
The recent conversion of secular musicians is a trend that has developed in Zimbabwe. Musicians such as Nicholas Zacharia, Taso, Sulumani Chimbetu, Leornard Zhakata and recently Macheso are reportedly lining to join churches in droves after their musical careers ran into limbo.
While their music is selling, many of the musicians are known to be serial womenisers and drunkards. Some have turned to the church in a bid to revive their waning proffesions. It remains to be seen if they will stay in the church, after their music is revived after a failed bid by Beverly Sibanda who went AWOL after her much-publicesed ‘born again’ event at a local. – Herald/Gossip Panda/Musvo
