Malamulele residents are refusing to back down while the IFP in KZN is warning against redrafts.
JOHANNESBURG – The issue of municipal demarcation has come into sharp focus on Tuesday afternoon.
Malamulele residents in Limpopo are refusing to back down and in KwaZulu-Natal, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is warning against the redraft of boundaries.
The IFP says it will oppose any moves to make the Nkandla Municipality part of a new metro in the province.
Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs Minister Pravin Gordhan reportedly asked the municipal demarcation board to consider the matter.
Nkandla is governed by the IFP and it is also President Jacob Zuma's home town.
The IFP's Mkhuleko Hlengwa says redrawing municipal boundaries should be about improving service delivery and not pushing any political party's agenda.
“The issue here is the ANC simply can’t stomach the fact that Zuma lives in an IFP-run municipality.”
Hlengwa says the Nkandla council is functioning well and that his party will fight any move to make it part of one of two new metros proposed for KwaZulu-Natal.
MALAMULELE UNREST
Police are investigating three cases of arson after schools were set on fire in Malamulele.
The local high school's administrative section was torched last night and two other schools were also partially burnt.
The town has been on lockdown since the beginning of the year when residents demanded their own municipality.
On Friday, the Municipal Demarcation Board rejected the community's proposal saying it didn’t meet the necessary criteria.
Tsonga speaking residents claim the Thulamela Municipality has been channelling services to TshiVenda-speaking areas to the detriment of their own community.
The police's Ronel Otto says no arrests have been made as yet.
“There is a strong police presence in the area and our patrols are continuing.”
