First Lady Grace Mugabe yesterday demonstrated the immense power she now wields within Zimbabwe's 'body politic when Cabinet ministers and Zanu-PF bigwigs scrambled to Harare International Airport to welcome her back to the country after she had been away in the Far East for more than two months.
Observers said the fact that senior government and Zanu-PF officials had felt compelled to converge at the airport together with her family and hundreds of ruling party supporters to welcome her back to Zimbabwe in the manner they did yesterday spoke volumes about how much political power she now wielded in the country.
Grace Mugabe arrived home yesterday from the Far East, where she was receiving medical treatment, to a rousing welcome from multitudes of Zanu-PF supporters and Government officials. The welcome party was organised by Senate president Edna Madzongwe and deputy political commissar of the Zanu-PF Women's League Omega Hungwe.
Grace Mugabe had remained behind in the Far East when President Mugabe returned from his annual leave last month as she recuperated from an appendectomy. Soon after her arrival, the First Lady took to the podium and addressed the crowd but did not respond to the litany of falsehoods peddled by online newspapers and social media networks relating to her health.
Grace Mugabe yesterday told hundreds of Zanu-PF supporters who welcomed her at Harare International Airport that she was in good health and now felt "as fit as ever" after undergoing her third successive surgery in the Far East last month.
She publicly disclosed her medical history and revealed that the latest surgery to remove a nagging appendix was the third one after the first one in 1986 to remove tonsils and the t second one in 1996 when she had gall bladder surgery.
