Suspected war veterans and Zanu (PF) supporters yesterday teamed up with Border Gezi youths employed at Mtawatawa District Hospital and demanded the dismissal of senior staff at the health institution.
Sources at the hospital told The Zimbabwean that more than 100 Zanu (PF) protestors staged the demonstration Monday morning, calling for the dismissal of the hospital matron, Chioneso Mukubvu, the administration and finance staff among other key personnel.
The sources revealed that the demonstration was organised by Border Gezi trained youths employed as general hands at the hospital, who allegedly spy on suspected MDC nursing and administrative staff.
“The local war veterans and their accomplices arrived at the hospital in the morning and started chanting party slogans denouncing Mukubvu and other non-partisan staff for alleged favouritism and corruption.
“Mukubvu was paraded before members of the community at the hospital and publicly humiliated by the demonstrators, who went on to demand her resignation together with some members of staff,” said one of the sources on condition of anonymity.
Mukubvu and others were accused of excluding Zanu (PF) supporters from attending workshops, misappropriation of donations made to the hospital by a cement manufacturing company, Lafarge, among other accusations.
Mukubvu reportedly denied the charges. The demonstrators left the hospital and threatened to return any time if the targeted personnel do not resign.
“The demonstration is one of the sustained Zanu (PF) strategies to instil fear among professionals such as nurses and teachers in the district,” said the source.
Mukubvu could not be reached for comment. Mtawatawa is known as a Zanu (PF) strongholds and an no-go area for MDC supporters in Mashonaland East Province.
Police officers at Mtawatawa Police Station confirmed the incident but referred The Zimbabwean to Marondera District Police for comment, as they were not allowed to speak to the media.
Insp Nobert Muzondo, police spokesperson Marondera District, professed ignorance about the demonstration and referred this reporter to the Harare-based police spokesperson, Chief Sup Paul Nyathi.
Nyathi in turn referred The Zimbabwean to Muzondo since ‘I am not aware of the incident and Muzondo would be better placed to comment’.
