EXCLUSIVE: SHE’S one of the world’s most famous women, so when Kim Kardashian visited Australia in November, we all went a little Kim K crazy.
While she was in town primarily to promote her new fragrance, the reality TV star-turned business woman slipped out to Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay for a stunning photo shoot with Vogue Australia.
Some might find it surprising that the 34-year-old fashion icon was chosen to front the February issue of the prestigious women’s magazine, but Vogue editor-in-chief Edwina McCann says it was a no-brainer.
“Kim Kardashian is one of the most searched people on Google, with as many Instagram followers (23 million and counting) as there are Australians. She is polarising. She is regularly the victim of cyber bullying. She is a serious fashion fan. She is also awfully nice,” McCann says.
“She’s a sweetie and I think sometimes with the L.A. factory, it’s easy to ridicule ... there’s a real disconnect between opinions of her and the reality of her,” she told news.com.au.
From Gisele Bündchen to Miranda Kerr, Vogue has featured some of the biggest names in the fashion industry on its glossy cover, but McCann says their latest cover girl, whose “fame would rival anyone’s” was completely trusting of senior fashion editor Christine Centenera’s decisions throughout the shoot.
“Obviously we shoot with a lot of famous people and there are diva antics, but Kim left her hotel at 6am and worked until dark and never complained once. She treated everyone on set with respect and dignity, from the assistants to the creators,” McCann said.
“She doesn’t have all of these strange body dysmorphic issues. She’s got her curves, and she’s proud of them.
“She sees herself as a blank canvas and willingly puts herself out there and invites commentary about it,” McCann said, referring to her infamous Paper magazine cover.
Refreshingly open when chatting to the mag, Kim spoke about her private life (or lack thereof) and her future hopes for her daughter North West, who she shares with rapper Kanye West.
“I like sharing my world with people. Although I wish there could be just maybe a little bit more privacy just for our daughter,” she says. “But it is what it is. She is going to grow up to be a strong girl. I love my life. I feel like I’m in a really good place right now.”
McCann, who described Ms Kardashian West as “the defining element of fame in this era”, admitted she was shocked by the widespread criticism after taking a peek on social media.
“People think they can just abuse her and think she doesn’t have feelings.
“Yes, she’s famous for being famous but that’s the society we’ve created.
“She understands that’s the price of fame and she gets on with it.”
Kardashian, who tied the knot with West in a lavish Italian ceremony in May 2014, credits her famous husband with not only evolving her personal style, but changing her life for the better in every way.
“He always has been such a good support throughout my life. I think we met 10 years ago and at different points we connected and got closer. We were always communicating, even if we were on different paths in our lives. We could always fill each other in on what was going on and always support each other. I think that created a good foundation for our relationship,” she tells Vogue.
“We are absolute best friends; we know every last thing about each other. We know our goals are to make each other’s lives really happy, and I think we know how to do that. We have good communication, and I think that’s so important in a relationship, and we have so much fun together. We laugh together. We’re obsessed with our family. We love our daughter so much.”
