Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Prisca Mupfumira has appointed a new leader for the government team to the salary negotiations, a development that is expected to facilitate dialogue between government and its workers.
Minister Mupfumira announced the appointment of Simon Masanga on Wednesday during her first meeting with the Apex Council where more than 10 civil servants’ unions were represented.
The appointment comes after calls by civil servants to revive the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC), which has been dormant since June last year, a development they said hindered efforts to address their welfare.
Minister Mupfumira yesterday confirmed Masanga’s appointment and added that salary negotiation meetings will resume soon.
“Masanga is the new salary negotiation team leader on the government’s side. The meeting that we held yesterday was the first between government and its workers. It was basically to know each other and announce the new developments,” said Minister Mupfumira.
She said she will meet the team leaders from the workers’ side before salary negotiation meetings resume.
Minister Mupfumira said the government was committed to improving workers’ welfare.
She once again assured the rest of the workers yet to receive their bonuses that they will be paid.
The Minister, however stressed that the government was facing serious cash flow challenges and urged civil servants to be patient.
The civil servants associations expressed hope that Minister Mupfumira would live up to her promises and work with them to improve the civil servants’ welfare.
“The Minister promised us that her door will always be open for us to discuss issues affecting civil servants. I hope we won’t find ourselves shouting through the windows,” said Raymond Majongwe, the Progressive Teachers Union (PTUZ) secretary general. Chronicles
