In the celebrity world, appearance and perception are everything. Just because you see someone on television or being interviewed on a red carpet, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are rolling in money. There is a certain saying that states the following: The glitzy highways of fame are littered with tons of broke celebs who fell off by the roadside. It might sound overly exaggerated but it definitely rings true. In Hollywood, it’s easy to get rich, go to all the parties, be seen at all the right places and have the time of your life. But when the money runs out, everything becomes real. In the piece below, we offer you 11 celebs that you might have thought were doing well and living very lavishly. However, the actual truth of the matter is that compared to other celebs, these individuals aren’t living very plush at all.

Celebs Who Actually Aren’t Rich
11. Terrell Owens – Net Worth $5 Million
Now $5 million is a lot of money, however the reason Ownens made it onto our list is for the mere fact that he was once worth a heck of a lot more.

Terrell Owens appeared on the most recent season of Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, and his face was definitely very familiar to the viewers tuning in to watch the show. Since the late 90’s, Owens was a bona fide star in the NFL. He was a brilliant wide receiver for marquee teams like The San Francisco 49ers, The Philadelphia Eagles and The Dallas Cowboys. He ended up accruing a huge amount of wealth around the neighborhood of $80 million. But due to a series of bad investments and atrocious money management decisions, he squandered his wealth. He also had crippling child support payments for four children he had with four different women. By 2012, his wealth had almost vanished. He was once a flashy sports hero with lots of money, but now he’s a celeb with not that much money at all.

10. Lauryn Hill – Net Worth $2 Million
Seriously, what happened to Lauryn Hill? In 1998, she was one of the most talented and amazing artists on the scene with a solo album that sold 8 million copies in the U.S. She won so many Grammy awards and was on the way to becoming the music icon of her era. Then the personal problems started followed by the major tax issues. In 2013, she had to spend 3 months in jail for tax evasion charges and it was reported in 2014, that she still owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to the IRS. There was one point when she was riding on top of the world, but the truth of the current situation is that she’s certainly not rich anymore.

9. Allen Iverson – Net Worth $1 Million
In many people’s eyes, the talented NBA shooting guard Allen Iverson is one of the best basketball players that have ever lived. He was a shining star for the Philadelphia 76ers for so many years and during his heyday there, he was treated like the mayor of the city. But as is usually the case, the money got to his head, and his extravagant spending and thuggish, partying ways did him in. Over his entire career, he made close to $200 million, including all the other lucrative endorsement deals he had along the way. He blew the money away mostly on expensive cars, big mansions and tons of gaudy jewelry. There are even reports of a judge garnishing $900,000 of his earnings to pay off a jewelry debt. At the age of 39, he’s quite broke, but there is a silver lining. He does have a $30 million trust with Reebok that should kick in when he turns 55.

8. T-Boz – Net Worth $1 Million

This is one of the examples of a music recording deal that went horribly wrong. In the 90’s, TLC was one of the most popular groups of all time. They were selling millions of records but due to a porous and shady record contract from their manager Pebbles, they hardly saw any of their rightful earnings. She had to file for bankruptcy in 1995 and again in 2001 due to her medical issues with Sickle Cell anemia and a brain tumor. Thankfully she pulled through and it was recently announced that the remaining members of TLC (T-Boz and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas) raised $150,000 on Kickstarter to fund their 5th and final album. Life can sure pack some wicked twists and turns.

7. Gary Busey – Net Worth $500 Thousand
The saga of Gary Busey is a sad “riches to rags” Hollywood tale. Even though he was once a shining star in Hollywood with over 70 films to his name, he was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2012. But the problem is this; even when he emerged from filing for bankruptcy, he still had over $400K in outstanding debt attached to his name. Most recently, he has been scoring advertising work like appearing in the latest TV commercials for Amazon’s Fire Stick, but the sad thing is that he’s always cast as a frenetic, unstable caricature of himself. It just goes to show that no matter how good life can be at a certain moment, bad choices and reckless living can always cause things to go terribly wrong.

6. Lindsay Lohan – Net Worth $500 Thousand
The Lindsay Lohan story is definitely a cautionary tale to all young stars in Hollywood. At one point in her career, Lohan was the hot starlet on the scene notching hit movies left and right. But then, all the hype started to get to her head and she started partying heavily, getting into drugs and strayed farther and farther away from her acting craft. It didn’t help that she also had a dysfunctional family that seemed to be fighting over her money. These days, she’s just a regular run-of-the-mill actress (apparently she’s off the drugs) and is doing her best to make it in the world of Hollywood and theater. There was one point when she was on top of the world with lots of money. But now, that’s not the case at all.

5. Stephen Baldwin – Net Worth $500 Thousand
Stephen Baldwin is the youngest of the famous Baldwin brothers, and in the last few years, he has had a really tough time with his finances. In 2009, he was more than $2 million in debt and had accrued over $70K in credit card bills. His financial woes continued when he was taken into custody in the state of New York for failing to pay over $350K in taxes between the years of 2008-10. Unlike his older brother Alec, it’s been a while since he had any kind of major Hollywood or TV success – one can argue that his one and only breakthrough movie was The Usual Suspects in 1995. He still gets roles in smaller, off-the-radar films, but he is definitely very far from being labeled as a rich celebrity.

4. Janice Dickinson – Net Worth $500 Thousand

The 59-yr-old Janice Dickinson has been in the news lately due to recent sexual allegations involving the once beloved Bill Cosby. But in her personal life, she has been going through some heavy drama with her finances. According to the New York Post, the former supermodel filed for bankruptcy in 2013 for being almost a million dollars in debt. There were even reports of her owing her dermatologist $8K for various cosmetic procedures she has received over the years. Also it’s been reported that she owed several thousands to celebrity anti-aging doctor Dr. Uzi Reiss for services rendered. Here’s a tip of Ms. Dickinson: Perhaps it’s time for her to relax with all the plastic surgery and just age gracefully.

3. Spencer Pratt & Heidi Montag – Net Worth $200 Thousand
Most recently, the former starring couple on MTV show, The Hills, Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag, were on the Bravo show Millionaire Matchmaker to find a date for Spencer’s sister, Stephanie. They might have appeared on a show that caters to millionaires, but the truth is this young couple is far from rich. In 2013, several reports surfaced about how the duo blew $10 million dollars in a short few years. In an interview with In Touch magazine, the couple discussed how they used to order $4,000 bottles of wine with their dinners. They also confessed that Heidi would go to the mall and spend $20-30k a day on a regular basis. If there was ever a surefire way to go broke, this frivolous couple certainly nailed it.

2. Cappadonna (Wu-Tang Clan)- Net Worth $100 Thousand
The rapper Cappadonna is one of the members of the Wu-Tang Clan who doesn’t get the respect he deserves. A big reason for that is he wasn’t one of the core members of the Staten Island collective when they dropped their debut album Enter the Wu-Tang:36 Chambers in 1993. But even 10 years later, after he was recognized as a full member of the crew, he actually had to take a job as a taxi driver in Baltimore to make ends meet. His dire financial situation was due to a shady record contract with the Wu-Tang leader The Rza. He was also facing some serious marital problems at home. Cappadonna is featured on the most recent Wu album A Better Tomorrow, so hopefully, his financial situation has gotten a little better.

1. Warren Sapp – Net Worth -$1 Million

It was once reported in an issue of Sports Illustrated that 78% of all former NFL players end up becoming bankrupt. It’s a truly sad statistic and the Super Bowl winning defensive tackle Warren Sapp is a perfect example of that trend. Over his lengthy career, he earned over $82 million but he ended up filing for bankruptcy in 2012 listing $6.45 million in assets and $6.7 million in debt. Some of his lavish expenses included buying a $4.1 million mansion and a shoe fetish that had him buying over 240 pairs of Air Jordan’s. No one needs that many sneakers – don’t you agree? You may have seen him laughing and showing off his skills on the 2008 season of Dancing With The Stars and you would have never had a clue of his dire financial straits.
