PROBLEM MASAU: Local celebrities are fast catching their Hollywood counterparts in breaking marriage collapse records. The following are public figures who have had a turbulent love life.

Morgan Tsvangirai – Locadia Karimatsenga
After losing his first wife Susan in 2009, the former Prime Minister became the most eligible bachelor in the land.

He was rumoured to be involved with several women before allegedly paying the bride prize for Locadia Karimatsenga in November 2011.

After just two weeks, Tsvangirai said he had married the ‘wrong woman’ and subsequently disowned her, making probably the fastest marriage collapse which involved a public figure.

In fact, the marriage lasted for only 12 days.

Sharon Macheso – Kudakwashe Munetsi
One newspaper article had a headline: Sungura wedding of the year, describing Sharon and Kudakwashe’s wedding. It was, indeed, punctuated with glitz and glamour.

Sharon’s father, Alick, put icing on the marriage by giving the newlyweds a Chitungwiza house as a present. However, three months down the line, the couple has filed for divorce. There are accusations and counter accusations of infidelity, drug abuse and laziness.

Sharon, through her lawyer Norman Mugiya of Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers, filed for divorce under case number HC9538/14, insisting that the marriage had irretrievably broken down. She is also claiming $400 monthly as maintenance. Sharon, in her declaration papers said: “The marriage relationship between the plaintiff (Sharon) and the defendant (Munetsi) has irretrievably broken down and there is no reasonable prospect of the restoration of a normal marriage relationship between the pair.”

Ivy Kombo- Edmore Moyo
Ivy Kombo and Edmore Moyo wedded in December 2001. Moyo subsequently filed for divorce in 2002 after discovering that his wife had sired a child with her foster father, Admire Kasi. It took several years for the divorce to pass through. However, the two lived together as husband and wife for less than a year.

Ivy Kombo and Admire Kasi married in 2009 and admitted that Sammy-Joe, the child that was born in 2002, did not belong to Moyo.

Makanaka Wakatama- Obvious Sambazi
Makanaka shot to prominence when she presented a child programme on ZBC tv.

In 2006, she made newspaper headlines after she was impregnated by a businessperson and entered into an early marriage at 15, and giving birth to two children by the age of 17. The marriage only lasted for two years.

Mercy Mutsvene marriages
Mercy Mutsvene has had three husbands in less than a decade. The gospel singer was married in 2002 by one Simbarashe Ngwenya.

She filed for divorce in 2007, citing irreconcilable differences. In 2008, she was married by a bishop and relocated to Zambia.

The marriage lasted for less than a year.

She divorced the Zambian bishop in 2009 and subsequently married Tongai Nheta the same year. She has been married to Nheta since then.

Pauline- Roki
Pauline and Roki were the Urban Grooves poster couple in the founding days of the music genre; the two married in 2004.

They had met a few years before when Pauline was just 17 years of age, fresh from her O’ Levels at Dominican Convent High School in Harare.

They shocked their fans, however, when they decided to get married. After they got married, Roki did not want her to continue performing and she disappeared from the entertainment scene for a while.

Her first child with Roki, daughter Skye, was born in 2005. The two divorced a year later because of Roki’s infidelity.

They reunited in 2009, and Pauline second child Minana was born.

They are currently not together.

Why do celebrity marriages collapse?

Many celebrity marriages do not last for more than five years. The Zimbabwe Mail reporter spoke to different people on why the marriages crumble so easily.

Nigerian filmmaker Fidelis Duker, who has been married for 17 years, said celebrities rush to get married before doing background checks on their partners.

“We keep hearing of marriages that were done in a ‘hush-hush’ manner. Why would you marry a man or a woman who has a mysterious past? If your friends or colleagues know that the person you are about to wed has a partner already, why should you still go on with such wedding?

“Why not do thorough background checks on your partner?

“But because of desperation, most marriages end up having problems, both in the music and movie industry,” he said on social media. Ambuya Ronia Hunda, a Harare based widow who has been married for 43 years, said celebrities do not respect the marriage institution.

“These known people think that everything should be fixed with money. There are things that people need to know before settling down. Issues such as compatibility should be looked into. Some of the people who are brought together with fame can’t live happily ever after,” she said.

Pastor Arnold Huruva said the marriages collapse because of lack of understanding.

“One of the reason marriages are crashing is because of lack of understanding. The Bible says two cannot work unless they agree. So, to me, understanding is a factor. Although there’s no formular to sustain a marriage, I believe couples should tolerate each other no matter what happens. Remain faithful to your husband or wife unconditionally,” he said.

Marriage counsellor Elizabeth Hamadziripi said marriage should be based on mutual respect and patience.

“Marriage is a mutual contract. At times, the parties involved might find it difficult to stand by the terms of the contract. This, I think, is the issue with celebrities and their marriages. But before being a celebrity, they are first and foremost human beings.

“Married couples should go into marriage without ambiguous expectations. They should understand that their weaknesses could be re-directed to become their strengths,” she said.
