WAR VETERANS and youths yesterday said they will block, from attending congress, Vice President Joice Mujuru and senior Zanu-PF officials implicated in a plot to depose President Mugabe.Congress begins on Tuesday next week.
Members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association in Manicaland staged a demonstration in Mutare yesterday against officials accused of plotting against President Mugabe.
They warned the rebels not to attend congress and urged officers accrediting delegates to congress not to entertain applications from those implicated in the plot. The liberation war fighters, drawn from all districts in Manicaland, denounced Cdes Didymus Mutasa, Munacho Mutezo, Fred Kanzama, Enock Porusingazi and John Chirimambowa, for siding with VP Mujuru and disrespecting the First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe.
ZNLWA chairman Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa said the sentiments of the comrades should be reflected in the registration of the delegates.
“It is untenable that people who have been plotting against the President, people who wanted to topple him, people who even had the idea of assassinating the President are allowed at the congress. We want to recommend to those who are doing the registration in Harare that these people must not be registered to attend the congress,” he said.
Cde Mutsvangwa said war veterans were 100 percent behind the President and the First Family.
“We are making final preparations for the congress. It is important that we as war veterans communicate the message that we are totally behind President Mugabe as the sole candidate for the presidency and First Secretary of Zanu-PF.
“We are also very happy that Dr Grace Mugabe has joined politics. We hail the Women’s League for embracing her so that she becomes the leader of the League. We are also happy that we have resolved that the President must have the sole authority to appoint his team. We want a constitutional amendment. We no longer want a situation where there are divided, distributed centres of power in Zanu-PF. It has bred factionalism; it has led to unprocedural push for power by some selfish interests, hiding under the cloth of the party but actually pursuing personal agendas. We want the authority of the President to be reasserted as the sole centre of power in Zanu-PF,” he said.
The interim chairman of the war veterans in Manicaland, Cde Nation Chiororo Madongorere, said Zanu-PF was bigger than individuals.
“We want unity within the party and we should rally behind our President. We do not want people who clandestinely push for power using dubious ways. Those fingered in factionalism must stay home and never dream of attending congress.
“They should rest at home. We are going to block them and its good for them not to attend because we are going to dress them down. Here in Manicaland we have Cdes Didymus Mutasa, Enoch Porusingazi, Munacho Mutezo, Kasi, Kaunye and many others who must not attend congress. We do not want to see them,” he said.
In Harare, Zanu-PF provincial Youth League chairperson Cde Godfrey Gomwe issued a similar warning. He told The Herald that the schemers would be blocked from congress.
“We, as the hosting province, will not allow all those who have been accused of plotting to kill our President to enter the match venue. We will not allow them to sit near the President because they are a security threat.
“Our constitution clearly stipulates that the youths are the party’s vanguard hence they should play their role in defending the interests of the party and that of the President. So those who have been accused of plotting to kill the President should not waste their time coming to congress because the youths will not allow them,” said Cde Gomwe.
“We do not want these people near the President. He should sleep well knowing that he is protected.”
He said even those elected into central committee recently but were involved in the plot would be stopped from attending congress. VP Mujuru, Cde Nicholas Goche, Cde Mutasa, Cde Rugare Gumbo and other senior Zanu-PF officials were reportedly plotting against President Mugabe. Eight provincial chairpersons linked to the VP Mujuru camp have since been dislodged through a vote of no confidence.
