A man from Emakhandeni allegedly hanged himself at his best friends’ home after his mother banned him from bringing girlfriends home. Paul Mutete, 22, was in the habit of bringing different women to his parents’ house.

His grieving father, Christopher Mutete, said his son took an overdose of some pills on Saturday morning and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he could not be attended to due to the ongoing doctors strike.

“We had to take him back home without getting any assistance. Our son was in the habit of bringing girlfriends home and we condemned his behaviour. At times, he retorted, saying all sort of rude words to us,” said Mutete.

He said his son showed little signs of recovering while at home. He said in the evening of the same day, Paul asked for forgiveness from the family.

“Paul asked us to pray for him. He said to us, ‘sorry mom and dad. Please forgive me for all the bad things l have done. Sorry for throwing harsh words at you and for bringing girls home.’ Lastly, he asked us to pray for him,” he said.

Mutete said the family never thought the incident would end in tragedy. He said their son’s words touched them and they truly forgave him.

“After the family prayer, they went to sleep and Paul’s sister, Sarah, woke up at around 2AM on the next morning to check on her ill brother. She discovered that he was not in his room. Sarah immediately told us that Paul was missing and we started searching for him,” said Mutete.

He said Paul was spotted by his mother hanging from a tree outside his friends’ house.
The friend is also a neighbour to the Mutetes. Mutete said his son’s death was a tragic experience and their neighbour empathised with them as Paul was their son’s best friend.

He said their son left a suicide note but the note was taken by the police for further investigations before the family could read its contents. “Paul’s body was collected by police on Sunday morning,” said Mutete. Mourners are gathered at 1132 Emakhandeni. Chronicles
