TWO Form Four students at Mt St Marys Mission in Wedza drowned in the nearby Nyanhemba dam last Saturday.
Tafadzwa Chinogara, from Zengeza, and Ngoni Shawariwa, from Rusape, drowned around mid-day Saturday and their bodies were only retrieved from the dam by the police's sub aqua unit a day later.
Chinogara was buried at Warren Hills cemetery last Wednesday while his friend, Shawariwa, was buried at his rural home in Rusape on Monday.
A school teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said students at the school were given permission to hold a get together party on Saturday by the school authorities.
The party was however cancelled at the last minute.
"This did not go down well with the 28 boys who decided to go at the nearby Gumbonzvanda shopping centre," he said.
Another group of students however decided to go and swim in the nearby Nyanhemba dam. The two students then jumped into the water at the deep end of the dam but they failed to come out.
The other students decided to go back to school but did not notify the school authorities fearing reprisals.
A woman who was doing laundry at the dam discovered the floating bodies on Sunday morning and alerted the school authorities who later called the police.
Mt St Mary's School Head Mr Maruni declined to speak to this publication referring all questions to Mashonaland East provincial education offices in Marondera.
