BULAWAYO – Vivacious former Miss Zimbabwe Lorraine Maphala Phiri recently turned physical in a bid to defend her marriage from alleged home wreckers.

The rumour mill in Bulawayo was overdrive this week that the former beauty queen, a down to earth character on most occasions, blew the top and was involved in a fight with 17-year-old Tanya Ngwenya at the up-market Zonkizizwe Shopping Mall in Bradfield.

Sources said the former beauty queen stumbled on a crew of girls lead by Rumbidzai Sibanda, who once hit headlines for allegedly having an affair with her husband, Sonny Phiri, entering her hair selling shop.

After seeing her husband’s former side dish within striking distance she decided to “teach” the young lady a lesson, sources said.

Onlookers in front of Food Lovers market saw the drama from start to end.

“When she got down (her shop is upstairs) she shouted profanities at the puzzled girls,” said a woman with a shop within the same complex.

What followed was Maphala Phiri allegedly accused Sibanda of continuously sleeping with her husband. In the heat of the shouting, the former model, now businesswoman, was overcome with emotion and she allegedly went for Sibanda’s friend, Ngwenya and gave her a warm slap. It was warm but it got everyone glued to the unfolding drama.

“She unleashed a serious slap. I could hear it from as far as 30 meters. Lorraine then said ‘Today I will teach you a lesson for sleeping with married men’. Then a fight started,” added the onlooker.

The teenager, who said she had nothing going on with businessman Phiri, confirmed the incident. She said she had never fought with anyone before and was scared of what was about to happen to her.

“Rumbi fled from the scene because she didn’t understand what that woman wanted from us. There I was, left behind, I tried to reason with Lorraine but she kept saying ‘ngiza ku karabha (I will beat you up). From the tsotsi language she was using I thought I was in deep trouble,” she said.

When Ngwenya tactfully retreated from the scene, she thought she had survived a beating of a lifetime. As for Maphala Phiri, she thought she had won an easy battle.

“I slowly moved away. When I turned my back Lorraine slapped me and at that point I turned back. I fought the fight of my life, knocked her down, pulled her hair, waited for her to stand on her feat and I beat her again. I was beginning to enjoy it but security guards stopped the fight. At that point she was all in tears. It was a bit funny because she kept saying ‘ngiza ku karabha’ “said the teenager.

As dramatic as the story sounds the former beauty queen’s husband, when asked about the incident, claimed that his wife has been away in the UK.

“Kikikiki (laugh) My wife has been in the UK for the past four weeks. If you write lies you will get arrested,” said Phiri.

The former beauty queen could not be reached for comment. Once taunted as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest modeling talents whose looks could open doors for her, her life has become somewhat of a script from a popular soap opera. B Metro
