Action heroes don’t always have to be men. That’s the lesson actress Jennifer Lawrence is teaching Hollywood, $1 million at a time. As Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movies, she fights for her life against a tyrannical government without spending much time worrying about which boy she’s going to choose. Her butt-kicking ways have helped the franchise earn $1.5 billion so far with two more movies on the way.
She also showed off her action chops in the recent X-Men: Days of Future Past. As shape-shifting mutant Mystique, Lawrence had plenty of fight scenes and her star power helped make the movie the highest-grossing of the X-Men films with $700 million at the global box office so far.
Oh, and Lawrence can also act. Just 23 years old, Lawrence has been nominated for three Academy Awards. She won the Best Actress award in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook.
That combination of action hero and award-winning actress makes Jennifer Lawrence the most powerful actress in Hollywood right now. We estimate that she earned $34 million between June 2013 and June 2014. Lawrence ranks 12th on our Celebrity 100 power list, which makes her the highest-ranked actress.
Who says women can't be action heroes? Just 23 years old, Lawrence is proving that women can be as big a draw for blockbusters as men. "The Hunger Games" is the most successful young adult franchise since "Twilight" and her recent turn as Mystique in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" helped make the movie the highest-grossing of the franchise. Combine that box office prowess with three Oscar nominations and one win and you have the most powerful actresses in Hollywood.
Full Coverage: The 100 Most Powerful Celebrities
The Celebrity 100 measures earnings and fame to rank the 100 most powerful celebrities in the worlds of movies, TV, books, sports, music and modeling. Our earnings estimates are based on dozens of conversations with agents, producers, lawyers and other in-the-know folks. We don’t deduct for taxes, agent fees or the other costs of being a celebrity. Our Power Actress list is derived from the Celebrity 100.
Sandra Bullock ranks second on our list of the Most Powerful Actresses and 36th on our overall Celebrity 100. In 2009, Bullock had a huge financial and critical hit with The Blind Side. After winning the Best Actress Oscar for the movie, Bullock took some time out of the limelight.
In 2013, she was back with a vengeance. Her comedy The Heat earned $230 million at the global box office (and showed that an action comedy with two female leads can be a big money maker).
But that was small potatoes compared to Gravity. The risky film, which features Bullock floating alone in space for much of its 93 minutes, was one of the biggest hits of 2013, earning $716 million at the worldwide and seven Oscars. Bullock will next be heard (but not seen) in The Minions, a spin-off of the popular Despicable Me franchise. Bullock earned an estimated $51 million in the past year.
Our third most-powerful actress is Angelina Jolie. Last year she ranked at the top of the Powerful Actress list but falls in 2014 because of a breather between movies. Our time frame for the Celebrity 100 is June 1, 2013 to June 1, 2014 and Jolie’s latest blockbuster, Maleficent, hit theaters May 30. The film is a hit. So far it has earned $522 million on a $180 million budget. Jolie is poised to collect a nice chunk of the film’s profits but she’ll get credit for those earnings on next year’s list. We estimate that Jolie earned $18 million over the past 12 months.
Scarlett Johansson returns to the Celebrity 100 after a six-year absence and ranks fourth on our Powerful Actress list. Like Lawrence, Johansson has profited by kicking butt. As Black Widow, she’s the only woman superhero currently getting screen time in Disney’s Marvel films. She helped drive the most recent Marvel film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, to new heights. The sequel earned $710 million at the global box office, almost double what the first Captain America film brought in. We estimate that Johansson earned $17 million in the past year.
Rounding out the top five is Jennifer Aniston. Thanks to Friends, Aniston has enough money to pick and chose her projects. Lately she’s been starring in smaller films that give her a chance to stretch her comedy muscles. Last year’s We’re The Millers grossed $270 million on a $37 million budget. We estimate that Aniston earned $31 million between June 2013 and June 2014.
