Police have arrested four suspected ring leaders of the chaos that erupted at Nyashadzamwari Co-operative in Southlea Park, Harare South, where some members of the co-operative were attacked and houses destroyed on Wednesday.
Police officer commanding Harare province, Senior Assistant Commisioner Clement Munoriarwa, identified the four as Anthony Gono, Rodrick Majoni, Ephraim Pfundukwa and one Jaira.
He said the four were in custody and were assisting police with investigations.
“I can confirm the arrest of four suspects who are believed to be the ring leaders of the thugs who attacked people at Nyashadzamwari Co-operative,” he said. “They are being investigated at the law and order department.”
The attacks, which left many houses destroyed and people injured, are being linked to the ongoing factional fights in Zanu-PF. Harare South legislator Cde Shadreck Mashayamombe and former Zanu-PF Harare youths chairman Cde Jimu Kunaka were implicated as the sponsors of the attacks.
When The Herald visited Nyashadzamwari Co-operative yesterday, the environment was tense with anti-riot police officers manning the area.
Chairperson for Nyashadzamwari Co-operative Cde Memory Mutandiro said the thugs came on Thursday intending to strike again but were dispersed by anti-riot police.
“We are now living in fear because the thugs are always appearing, but they are getting away scot-free, yet they should actually be arrested,” she said. Herald
