A BULAWAYO man allegedly received a thorough beating from his brother-in-law last week after he arrived at his in-law's house to ask for a 20 litre bucket from his wife who had left their matrimonial home.

This came to light when Ndaba Nkomo (41) appeared before West Commonage Magistrate Temba Chimiso facing charges of contravening Chapter 4(1) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.

He was found guilty as charged, and sentenced to six months in prison. However, three months were suspended for five years on condition that he does not, within that period, commit an offence of similar nature.

The other three months were suspended for 105 hours of community service.

Nkomo pleaded guilty to the charge and in mitigation, stated that he was a family man who had been angered by his brother-in-law's guts to visit his house knowing he was not welcome.

Prosecutor Kingston Mukanganwi told the court that sometime last month, the complainant, Msainwa Ncube (43), had a misunderstanding with his wife Nomsa Mombe who then took some property to her brother, the accused's house in Emthunzini suburb, Umguza.

A few days later, Ncube went to Nkomo's house in Emthunzini to ask for a 20 litre bucket for his laundry.

His wife locked him in the house and called her brother, who upon arrival began assaulting him several times, shouting that he was not even his sister's type, since he could not afford to buy himself a mere bucket.

Neighbours, who came to Ncube's rescue after hearing noises and screaming, were told to mind their business and not meddle in domestic affairs.

They, however, did not listen to him, but effected a citizen's arrest on Nkomo, whom they took to the police station.
