Founder of the under-fire Philanthropy Institute of Zimbabwe and the facilitator for the International Institute of Philanthropy(Zimbabwe) accused if conferring bogus doctorate degrees to Oliver Mtukudzi , United Family Church International’s Ruth Makandiwa and Isabel Chihuri is an ex convict.
“Doctor” Enrico Sibanda served prison term at Whawha Juvenile prison after he was convicted at the Harare Magistrates Court on theft related charges. Sibanda said that he was only a juvenile and maintains that he was falsely accused of the offences that resulted in his conviction. He also said that his conviction as a juvenile does not interfere with his works now as an adult. ” I was a juvenilehazvina basa. I was falsely accused of the offence involving cellphones,kuwanikwa ndine zvinhu zvakabiwa. I was 15, 16..between 15 and 17. I do not remember how long I served because it was a long time ago. These things I have since forgotten about them,” he said

He said he started a lot of initiatives at the prison that resulted in the setting up of a juveniles’s school. “When I went to WhaWha, I started teaching other juveniles there and I set up a school. I have launched several initiatives. I was the first to record a CD for juveniles at the prison.I went with a studio there and recorded the Zim Juveniles Volume 1,” he said.
Sibanda further justified his doctorate. He said it is not out of the academic process but his institute recognized his efforts in advancing humanity. He said he deserved to be a Philanthropist because of his works in helping women and juveniles. “I have an honorary Humane Letter because of the work I have done to the advancement of humanity. I have contributed significantly to humanity in Zimbabwe and I declare it is legitimate. The Institute saw it fit for the founder to be accorded with the doctorate because of his vision, kwatakabva kwakaoma, but kwatirikuenda Mwari varatidza kuti rehabilitation is a reality. I have a success story,” he said.
He said ZPSpoints to himasone of their success rehabilitation stories.”Right now hapana CEO wandisinakusumudza kuendanaye kuWhaWha. I have launched Prison Bhora, ZImbabwe Juvenile Inmates,National Soccer Championship and the Zimbabwe Juvenile inmtes Festivalof the Arts. I advocate issues of HIV and AIDS in prisons for juveniles. I mobilise for resources that for the children to sit for the O’Level exams, encourage the society to embrace juveniles because they are still young and they deserve a second chance.I speak to youths ad I encourage them to do good,” he said.
He added,” I do not help Juveniles only, I help women. I started the Women Heritage Society. I started the Women Heritage Museum.I am a motivational speaker and public speaker”
He said he is proud of his work and can not be deterred. “I am a success story whether people want to accept it or not. For your own information,I am only 27 years old and I have achieved these things in a short space of time. He added that it is an Affiliate of the International Institute of Philanthrophy,IIP,also registered with the Government of Zimbabwe,Department of Deeds, Companies and Intellectual Property, Registration Number,MA 77 8/2014. He also dispelled allegations that they are not registered with the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education(ZIMCHE) saying his organisation is not academic. ” The Philanthropy Institute of Zimbabwe and the International Institute of Philanthropy have no business with with ZIMCHE adnd or any other academic body or authority as te above stated Institutes are non academic entities outright. It would be inappropriate for the institutes to approach an academic office yet they are non academic entities conferring none academic Honorius Causa,” he said
He added that the Doctor of Human Letters degree which were accorded to Tuku and company can not be done via academic efforts saying that tey are gained through significant contributions to the society,humanity and philanthropy. He explained the issue of Zimra Boss GershomPasi saying he can not be accorded the degree because he was absent. He also added that IIP is not deterred or discouraged and will continue to recognize and honour individuals and entities that make a significant contribution to humanity together with Philanthropists.
Academics have dismissed honorary doctorate degrees conferred by “Doctor” Sibanda’s Philanthropy Institute of Zimbabwe arguing that the institution has no authority to do so. PIZ also conferred Honorary Degrees to Zimbabwe National Roads Administration Chief Executive, Mr Frank Chitukutuku, Avenues Clinic Managing Direcot Ms Merisa Kambani and Pastor Ruth Musarurwa of Christ Embassy.
However Zimra Commissioner General, Gershom Pasi snubbed the Doctorate saying he is still known as Mr Pasi.
Meanwhile Tuku speakign through his manager was tactful and dodged the issue. “With regards to this award, we regard it as any other award that Mdara (Tuku) has received,” said Tuku’s manager Sam Mataure. “From our side, we have no comments to make about the award. I think the best thing to do is for you to approach the institution and ask them. We are in Tanzania at the moment.”
