ZIMUTO – In an incident that has left residents of Mutsvanga and the surrounding villages shell-shocked a woman allegedly threw her child off a moving vehicle before jumping off through the window Tuesday last week.

The woman identified only as Vimba from Mupfugami Village had boarded the commuter omnibus at Gonamombe Business Centre. In the vehicle were other passengers, two of whom allegedly engaged in a conversation which triggered the tragedy.

A source said: “Two ladies inquired from the crew which route they were taking shortly after crossing the Munyambe River Bridge.

The crew indicated that they were taking the Mazambara Road to which one of the ladies remarked, “Zvangu zvaita.” “The woman thought the remark had something to do with her and her kid, prompting her to think she had been kidnapped.”

At that juncture the woman reportedly opened the vehicle window and threw her child out before following suit. Upon hitting the ground, it is said the child’s head ripped open, splattering brain matter onto the ground. On hitting the ground and realising what had happened to her child, Vimba is reported to have started running away and the commuter omnibus crew had to chase after her.

Police were called in to attend the scene leading to the arrest of the woman who by the time of writing was said to be recuperating under police guard at Masvingo General Hospital.

The child is yet to be buried as police continue with investigations. The incident comes hardly a month after another Zimuto woman killed three children by feeding them poison-laced food before taking her own life.
