Government yesterday assumed ownership and operation of the New Limpopo Bridge following the end of the 20-year Built Operate and Transfer agreement with the New Limpopo Bridge (Ltd), a company which constructed the bridge in 1994. The hand over and take over ceremony was held at the duty free shop on the Zimbabwean side and was witnessed by South Africa’s Transport Minister Mrs Dipuo Peters and other top civil servants from both governments.
The BOT concession agreement had the blessings of both governments. Ministry of Transport permanent secretary Mr Munesu Munodawafa signed the transfer papers on behalf of the Government, while Mr Thomas Proustow was representing the NLB (Ltd) shareholders.
Addressing delegates, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu said they had appointed the Zimbabwe National Road Administration as their tolling agents.

It is understood that NLB was realising around US$1,6 million in revenue from toll fees per month.
“As you may be aware, the New Limpopo Bridge is the first major infrastructure project in Zimbabwe undertaken by the private sector with Government,” said Dr Mpofu.
Minister Peters said: “Private public partnerships are an option for financing the infrastructure we need and boost the economic growth of our countries without direct utilisation of government finance, which are needed to meet other pressing social wage demands.”
