One of the secret issues behind the MDC rebels’ fight against Morgan Tsvangirai is that of material benefits and positions.

An audio tape leaked to The News Leader from the rebels’ camp reveals that a meeting they held at Hatcliffe in Harare last month was dominated by former MDC deputy treasurer Elton Mangoma trying to convince those who attended, that Tsvangirai had left them out on allocation of positions, and therefore had to dump him.

Mangoma and Biti have been targeting individuals who feel aggrieved for having been left out when appointments were made for the Government of National Unity (GNU). They have also been luring members that failed to get endorsed at the party’s primary elections to stand as parliamentary and council candidates.

The audio tape, which is 42,5 minutes long, starts with Mangoma addressing the meeting. Mangoma’s first reference was of former Harare deputy mayor Emmanuel Chiroto, who stood last year as an independent, after being suspended by the MDC over corruption allegations at Harare City Council.

‘Kana pana VaChiroto kwakabva kwanzi, nokuti haandisapote, saka haafanire kumira (Tsvangirai blocked Chiroto’s candidature because he viewed him as being a person who doesn’t support him).’

Mangoma then referred to former councillor for Ward 4 in Harare, Friday Muleya, who failed in his bid to stand in Mbare constituency. He added, ‘Ndizvo zvimwe chetezvo pana Muleya, akabva anounzirwa Eric Knight (The same applies to Muleya who was left out as Tsvangirai imposed Erick Knight).’

Mangoma then made reference to individuals that were left out when appointments for positions in the GNU were made, using the examples of Kambuzuma MP Willas Madzimure and Paul Madzore of Glen View South.

He said, ‘Imi vakomana makazongosiyiwa zvigaro zvichipihwa vamwe nokuti haakudei (You guys were just left out when Tsvangirai allocated positions, because he doesn’t like you).’

Madzimure also addressed the meeting and echoed the same sentiments.

He said, ‘Kubva 2000 tiri maMP ake, ini naMadzore uyu, chatakaitirwa hapana, asi akanotora vanhu vake. Pakauya inclusive takaona tasiyiwa pazvigaro, zvikatigumbura (We were MPs since 2000, myself and Madzore, but Tsvangirai never did anything for us. When he made GNU appointments, he left us and we were disappointed).’

Mangoma also told the meeting that Tsvangirai had become rich and claimed he left them out of means of benefiting.

He said, ‘Akange ave nemari isu vamwe nemi mese tisina. Akange oenda kunze kwenyika kunodya mari (Tsvangirai had become rich while us and the rest of you were poor. He used to go outside the country to spend and enjoy himself.’

Mangoma further claimed that he, together with the other rebels, were the factor behind Tsvangirai’s support base.

‘Vamwe vanoti Tsvangirai ane vanhu vakawanda. Asi vanhu ivavo ndisu taivati endai ikoko kuna Tsvangirai. Ndisu taikonzera kuti vanhu vamude (Some say Tsvangirai has many supporters, but we are the ones who used to mobilise those people and rally them behind him).’

Mangoma concluded his address by claiming that their group had taken over the majority of provinces in the MDC.

‘Isu tave nemaprovince nine out of 12, uye tichatora vamwe kubva kuZanu, kuMavambo nekumwewo (We have won over the support of nine out of the 12 provinces in the MDC and we will bring others from Zanu PF and Mavambo Kusile Dawn, as well as other parties).’

When we phoned Mangoma to question him about the audio tape, he declined, saying, ‘l am not talking to the media’.

Madzimure was not available.

Despite Mangoma’s claims of progress by their camp, the reality is that it has failed to take off the ground. The MDC rebels have become to be a subject of ridicule due to them giving confused signals, of claiming to have taken over the party, yet also saying they are planning to form their own party.
