Premiership side Dynamos are set to face sanctions from ZIFA for
allowing banned Bidvest Wits defender Thomas Sweswe to train with the
club on Wednesday. The former DeMbare hardman Sweswe was banned for
life for his alleged involvement in the notorious and the country’s
biggest match-fixing scandal dubbed Asiagate. Sweswe continued with his
career in South Africa because FIFA has
not endorsed the ban to take a worldwide effect. With the life ban
hanging over his head, Sweswe joined Dynamos for their training session
at Zimphos Ground near Msasa, a development which might land coach
Calisto Pasuwa and Dynamos in hot soup. Sweswe is said to have trained with DeMbare from 9am when the session started till it ended just after midday on Wednesday.
ZIFA lawyer Ralph Maganga confirmed that training with a player under a ban is “an offence” and that it may attract sanctions which range from fines to bans from the mother body.
“Assuming that he trained
with Dynamos, the team will be summoned before the disciplinary
committee where they will definitely be sanctioned. The disciplinary
committee will decide on the team’s fate and I would not want to
pre-empt that but the sanctions could range from fines to bans. It
however like I said, the disciplinary committee will have to decide on
that. The offence has been committed by both the club and the player
because the player is not supposed to take part in any football activity
in Zimbabwe. So both parties will appear before the disciplinary
committee. “It however, could have been worse had Dynamos fielded him in
a competitive match. Sweswe is on a life ban that is however, still to
be endorsed by FIFA so he is free to play for any team outside the
country but is not allowed to be involved in football in Zimbabwe,”
Maganga said.
Dynamos manager, Richard Chihoro however professed ignorance of the “offence” and maintained that Sweswe never pitched up at their training ground let alone train with the team.
“Who told you that? That player (Sweswe) never trained with us. I was there I never saw him and I don’t know what you are talking about. I think this is coming from someone who might have seen pictures taken a long time ago of Sweswe training with us because that never happened on Wednesday as you are alleging,” Chihoro said.
However, all the Dynamos players that Gemazo Blitz talked to off the record confirmed that Sweswe joined them at their training. “We trained with him yesterday (Wednesday), he was at Zimphos with the team. We started the training around 9am and finished around 12:30pm. He was putting on a Kaizer Chiefs jersey and blue shorts which I assumed to be old Dynamos shorts,” one player said.
“He came and trained with us yesterday (Wednesday), the training was conducted by coach Pasuwa and his assistants as usual. He is still the Rambo, he still plays that physical game characterised by tough tackles,” another player said.
