Court Reporter Harare Bureau
A HARARE maid who stole US$700,000 in cash from her employer has told a court that she is unable to pay back the money.
Euna Tsekwete, 32, of Shamva, was last week found guilty of theft and will be sentenced on Friday. Her two alleged accomplices, Rebecca Kawe, 28, and Sheila Nyandoro, 30, were cleared of the charges after Harare magistrate, Temba Kuwanda ruled that evidence produced in court did not incriminate them.

Yesterday, Tsekwete told the court that she could not resist the temptation to steal after stumbling upon the fortune stored away in a kitchen drawer while cleaning Jamil Farogh’s Belvedere house.

Speaking through her lawyer, Nicholas Chikono, Tsekwete pleaded poverty — revealing that she had blown most of the money from “her share”.

When she was arrested, she had bought two houses in Shamva, a Mazda 323 and had $8,500 cash.

She said: “I was employed as a house maid earning a meagre U$200 and could not resist the sudden temptation when I stumbled upon the US$700,000. I thought since I was working for a rich man, if I took a portion of the wealth he might not feel the pinch.”

Her lawyer added: “A convict should not suffer in order to scare other would-be offenders. The convict is a first offender who should be spared the wrath of incarceration.” But prosecutor Michael Reza asked the magistrate to impose a deterrent sentence in order to send the right message to would-be offenders.

“The fact that she’s a first offender does not hold any water as she started her career at the deep end. The offence involves a huge amount of money and a non-custodial sentence would set a bad precedence,” he said.

Reza alleged that Tsekwete stumbled upon the cash which Farogh left in one of the drawers in the kitchen while travelling to Gweru.
Tsekwete allegedly approached Kawe and Nyandoro and informed them about the money before they connived to steal it.
