Reliable sources within the Morgan Tsvangirai led MDC T indicate that the party’s feuds are taking a new direction with a new battle arising between irate party Organising Secretary Nelson Chamisa coming up against ailing party President Tsvangirai.
According to the senior members of the party who revealed the information to the media, Chamisa is angry at Tsvangirai after Tapuwa Mashakada was appointed Acting Secretary General of the Tsvangirai faction ahead of him.
According to the insiders, Chamisa claims to have been the one who pushed “suspended” Secretary General Tendai Biti out of his position and so deserved to have been given the acting position. The insiders claim that Chamisa wanted to use the acting Secretary General position to find his way up to contest the party presidential election at the early congress in October.
Over the years Chamisa has not hidden his presidential ambitions and has vowed to take over the position after Tsvangirai. His first point of call according to information in the party was to get rid of Biti and then slowly push Tsvangirai aside. Chamisa’s plans now appear to be going up in flames with Mashakada moving ahead of him into the Secretary General position.
As if that is not enough, Chamisa now also has to fight off a contest of presidency from “prodigal son” Job Sikhala who is said to be well positioning himself to take over from the ailing Tsvangirai. Chamisa’s wars are slowly coming out into the open as he has not been kind with his words and actions of late.
According to the sources, Chamisa has been speedily organising rallies for party president Tsvangirai well knowing that the party leader is not well and not in a position to address the rallies let alone attend. The sources claim that two weeks ago Chamisa tried to drag Tsvangirai to a rally in Glenview well knowing that Tsvangirai was not well and would not be able to address the rally which would have opened an opportunity for him to address the crowd and gain a little mileage. The young politician is said to have been very angry when he was told that Mashakada was to address the rally in Tsvangirai’s place.
Last week, the sources claim that Chamisa went against advice and organised a rally at the Zimbabwe Grounds the ceremonial venue of Zimbabwe’s political rallies where no party dares to go unless it is assured of a crowd of no less than 50 000 people. Chamisa is said to have insisted on the venue well knowing that at this time and with a short notice the party was not going to be able to bring the crowd to 50 000 which according to sources was a way Chamisa wanted to use to show a dwindling support for Tsvangirai.
The sources further claim that Chamisa was well aware that party President Tsvangirai was in no condition to be able to attend the rally but insisted on the rally claiming the president would be fit by the weekend. On the day of the rally the sources claim that Chamisa insisted on dragging Tsvangirai to the rally “in a condition that would have embarrassed the president.” Throughout the morning of the rally Chamisa is said to have kept insisting to party leadership and the presidency that Tsvangirai just had to come to the rally until late in the afternoon that he conceded to the leadership and the less than 10 000 crowd at the grounds that Tsvangirai would not make it.
The insiders claim that, Tsvangirai’s second no show is exactly what Chamisa had wished and knew would happen. Unfortunately for him, Mashakada was again appointed to speak on behalf of Tsvangirai which also didn’t go down well with Chamisa.
Noting the situation, the short tempered Job Sikhala took to the podium at the rally and started throwing harsh words at Chamisa telling him that he was too young and inexperienced to have any presidential ambitions. The previous week in Glenview when they addressed the rally, both Sikhala and Mashakada out rightly closed out anyone who would have wished to challenge Tsvangirai in the upcoming congress as a warning to the power hungry Chamisa.
Mashakada told the crowd that the party would make sure that no one will put his name upfront to contest Tsvangirai at congress no matter what it took. Sikhala on the other hand claimed that the party was ready to stand with Tsvangirai’s leadership until he also turns ninety a statement which according to analyst was to spite off Chamisa.
In his response, Chamisa also took to the podium at the Highfield rally telling off Sikhala that it was not for Sikhala or Tsvangirai to decide who should lead the party but the people hoping to be cheered by the crowd which in turn booed him. In another shock move, against everyone in the MDC T’s sentiments that the ailing Tsvangirai is up and about and will be fit soon, Chamisa told parliament that Tsvangirai will not be recovering from his ailment anytime soon drawing cheers and laughs from the ZANU PF side of parliament.

Chamisa needs to be stopped and quickly or else we are going for another split before the elections and that one will be led by Chamisa,” said the source closing off.
