A Chiredzi mother was shocked when she took home a wrong baby. She only realised the mistake when nurses came knocking on her door.

Enes Masikati nee Chikozho (22) gave birth at Chiredzi General Hospital last week. After discharge she went home and breastfed her baby for almost 24 hours before nurses arrived and told her that she had been given the wrong baby. The mistake was only picked up by the husband of the woman whose baby had been collected in error because he had been in the ward when his wife gave birth. His wife gave birth to a baby boy but he was surprised when he visited her later to realise that she remained in the hospital with a baby girl.

Wrong Baby
The Provincial Medical Director, Dr Robert Mudyiradima confirmed the incident but said he could not give more information on the issue because it was sensitive and required further investigations."I can only confirm this issue but will not give a comment because this is a sensitive issue that needs further investigations and such things should not happen and l will comment after investigations are completed," said Mudyiradima.

Eness Masikati who had an interview with The Mirror said she was no longer sure whether she really gave birth to a baby boy or girl. She said this was because hospital officials recklessly exchanged children for 24 hours until she was followed home after being discharged.

Masikati said that when she went to the hospital late Friday afternoon to deliver there was another woman in the delivery room who had given birth but was in a bad condition as she was bleeding profusely. She said all nurses were concentrating on that woman and so she gave birth unattended.

She said she was unconscious for some time after giving birth but she remembered a male nurse telling her that she had been blessed with a baby girl but when she woke up there was a baby boy.Masikati said she even questioned the nurse who gave her a pink baby card which indicated that she had given birth to a baby girl but the nurse then destroyed the card to write a new record which tallied with the mistake that had been done.

"I was followed home after the other woman's husband had questioned why his wife had been given a baby girl when he had seen her deliver a boy. This is how the matter came to light, otherwise I was going to keep someone else's child for life," said Masikati.

Stanley Chikozho the husband to Enes Masikati expressed his disappointment with the way things were done and said whoever was responsible was so reckless."I was called by the hospital and they explained the whole issue to me but l was not happy at all with what happened and whoever is responsible should be brought in for questioning because this is what l call a reckless mistake that can destroy marriages," said Chokozho.

He demand that a DNA and HIV tests be carried out by a private hospital because these people might have lied that both parents were negative to protect their jobs. Mirror
