Sulumani Chimbetu and Alick Macheso were nowhere to be seen at the 21st
February Movement celebration gala that took place in Marondera.
Fans were left bitterly disappointed when the artists failed to pitch up despite an MC’s announcement that they would be present to perform. Asked why Sulumani failed to perform at the gala in Marondera, his publicist Joe Nyamungoma said they had been told that Zanu PF had no money to pay him.
Nyamungoma said they, however, opted to perform for free for the sake of the fans despite what they had been told, but the organisers would not welcome their suggestion. Attempts to get a comment about the issue from Macheso were futile as his assistant manager Jethro Machanja said he was not aware of the issue, saying he had no knowledge of it.
“You are the first one to tell me about that issue. If it is like that, can you contact my boss William Tsandukwa?” Machanja said. However, Tsandukwa was not picking up his phone.
Furthermore, dancehall artistes failed to perform to the much expected standards at the celebrations.
Disappointed fans could be seen gazing at the Mawayawaya hitmaker Shinsoman who failed to perform to the fans’ expectations.
If it wasn’t for King Shaddy and Freeman who managed to clear up the mess with their songs Machirachete and Shaina Mwanaiwe – fans would have been left grumbling.
Furthermore, despite interruptions by massive power cuts, multiple National Arts Merits Awards winner and man-of-the-moment Mukudzei Mukombe aka Jah Prayzah lived up to his billing.
He managed to keep his legion of fans on their feet with his hit songs such as Tsviriyo and Mwanasikana from the moment he got on stage.
Zacharia also proved to be a force to reckon with as he took hundreds of fans down memory lane with yesteryear songs.- DAILY NEWS
