Five police officers died on the spot, while 11 other people were injured when a commuter omnibus they were travelling in overturned near Vungu River along the Gweru-Bulawayo highway on Wednesday.
The incident occurred near the 27km peg along the road and the Toyota Hiace which had 16 passengers was heading towards Harare.
Police said the five are Sergeant Knowledge Mushava and Constables Sophia Chinyerere, Claudius Mafaune, Muzembere and Elizabeth Mangezi, all stationed in Bulawayo.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they were investigating the case of the accident.
“The five were coming from Bulawayo enroute to Harare when a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus carrying 16 passengers burst a rear left tyre,” she said.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba said the vehicle veered off the road, overturned and landed on its wheels.
Last year, police said they were worried with the driving conduct of commuter omnibus drivers and warned that they would not hesitate to impound vehicles and arrest reckless drivers.

She said they had noted that the majority of the road accidents were being caused by public service vehicles, mostly kombis and conventional buses.
